Sclerotherapy Q & A

What is sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is an injection that treats small varicose and spider veins.  The injection contains a chemical irritant that causes the vein walls to stick together and close. Once the vein closes, your body reroutes blood through healthier veins, and your varicose veins and spider veins gradually disappear.

Sarasota Vascular Specialists has been providing expert vascular care in the tri-county area for more than 30 years. Their board-certified vascular surgeons offer many treatments for visible veins. Sclerotherapy is one of their in-office treatments.

Am I a candidate for sclerotherapy?

The Sarasota Vascular Specialists team completes an evaluation to determine the best treatment for your varicose or spider veins. You could be a candidate for sclerotherapy if you have visible veins that affect your appearance and want to get rid of them.

Though varicose and spider veins are primarily a cosmetic concern, these visible veins can also be signs of a circulation problem. The Sarasota Vascular Specialists team might also recommend sclerotherapy if your damaged veins are affecting your circulation.

What happens during sclerotherapy?

The Sarasota Vascular Specialists team performs your sclerotherapy in the office. Before your injection, they clean your skin with an antibacterial agent. Then, using a very fine needle, they inject the chemical solution into your vein.

The number of injections you need will depend on the size of the vein and the number of veins you want to have treated.

You can feel some discomfort during the injection, but there’s no need for anesthesia. The entire procedure takes less than an hour, and you can drive yourself home after the injections.

What happens after sclerotherapy?

The team provides specific instructions following your sclerotherapy treatment.

They recommend that you wear compression stockings or socks following your sclerotherapy treatment to compress the vein walls during the healing process. For spider veins, they suggest that you wear the stockings or socks for two days. For varicose veins, you should wear them for three weeks.

It takes 3-6 weeks for spider veins to disappear and 3-4 months for varicose veins to disappear. Depending on your goals, the team might recommend more than one sclerotherapy session to get the best results.
